Happy Fasnacht Day!

Happy Fasnacht Day! Lucas had his first fasnacht today. And you might be asking... what the heck is Fasnacht Day? Well, it's a twist on Fat Tuesday, that's celebrated in Lancaster County, PA (where we live), to celebrate the last day before Lent. Fasnachts (from the German for "Eve of the Beginning of the Fast") are yummy donuts, typically plain, but also made with sugar, powdered sugar or glaze. Fasnachts were produced as a way to empty the pantry of lard, sugar, fat and butter, which were forbidden during Lent. We prefer ours glazed, and headed to the local farmer's market to pick them up today! It's good we ordered them ahead of time, because by the time I got there at 1 PM, there were only powdered ones left! Lucas enjoyed the few bites that I gave him...

Morgan had her fasnacht today too. We too had to order cause everyone runs out. Especially the really good little bakeries. It is so much fun watching these little ones grow and get family traditions started.

Do you have Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry? Do you happen to know the cause of Lucas' hearing loss? The reason I ask is because I've been trying (just for fun) to track down Ben's two different Connexin-26 mutations, and I have some reason to believe that one of them may come from my mother's German ancestors, who settled in PA. If Lucas had the same mutation (313del14), that would be really interesting!

ooooh- very fun! my husband would be all over this. any excuse to celebrate with food makes him joyous- especially if it includes something like donuts.
