Lucas is getting...

* A SECOND COCHLEAR IMPLANT!!! *

Barring any insurance problems, Lucas will be bilaterally implanted with a Cochlear N5 implant in his left ear on November 22, 2010. Surgery will be at CHOP with with the same surgeon who did the first surgery. We are excited, nervous, anxious and just so incredibly thrilled to give him surround sound! More details to follow, but we just wanted to share our very exciting news!

Yee-haw!!!! I saw the post title come up and was desperately curious to find out what he was getting ... and what a wonderful surprise! I'm so glad you managed to make this happen. I'm sure the run-up to surgery will be stressful, but this too shall pass. Good luck with everything, and keep us up to date.

Congratulations, how wonderful for Lucas! If his experience with being bilateral ends up being anything like mine, you will notice a huge (positive) difference in his hearing :)

That is awesome!

Piece of advice though, it could be REALLY rough! Miss Kat got her second CI just about 20 months after her first. She really struggled with the first few weeks. She took to her first CI like a fish in water because, to her, the input was SO much better than her hearing aids. BUT, now she gets such great sound from her first CI, the sound of the second one was unacceptably unclear and garbled. She called it "beeping" and she would cry and say that she didn't want to wear it. It got better after about two weeks, when she started to be able to understand speech with the new side, but that short time was VERY trying (especially since we were completely unprepared for it.)
